SEPTEMBER 2016 – “UnEarthed” Black Sabbath Rock Memorabilia WITHDRAWN from auction.

A unique and insightful collection of Memoribilia which had recently been ‘unearthed’ and was due to go under the hammer at Sheffield Auction Gallery on Friday 30th September has been withdrawn from sale. Dating from the period 1968 – 1973 the collection included Earth publicity posters, flyers, hand written song lyrics, photographs, a quantity of postcards from Ozzy and his then wife Thelma, to his mother in Birmingham written while on tour.

The collection had generated considerable national and international interest amongst fans and collectors alike. Specialist Music Valuer and Auctioneer at the Gallery, Stephen Flintoft, released the following statement; “the items have been sold by Private Treaty, for an undisclosed sum, to the Osbourne family, ensuring that this important piece of “hard rock” musical history remains intact.”

Perhaps the most interesting item, amongst so many were the handwritten lyrics headed ‘by Earth’ to the song ‘Changing Phases’ a title later changed to ‘Solitude’ which featured on the 1971 double platinum Black Sabbath album ‘Master of Reality’.

Black Sabbath, (a name taken from an early 1960’s Boris Karloff horror film, with the self styled Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne as its front man) was formed in 1969 and the chilling lyrics and infectious guitar riffs that transformed the musical world for ever were born. Iconic records such as Paranoid came to pass.

However, in what must be a challenging pub quiz tie break question, what was the name of the band from which Black Sabbath was created? The answer is Earth – a little known heavy blues band formed in 1968 in the Midlands.

It is from this period in Ozzy Osbourne’s career that a unique and insightful collection of Memoribilia has been ‘unearthed’ and will soon go under the hammer at Sheffield Auction Gallery’s specialist auction on Friday 30th September. Dating from the period 1968 – 1973 the collection includes Earth publicity posters, flyers, hand written song lyrics, photographs, a quantity of postcards from Ozzy and his then wife Thelma, to his mother in Birmingham written while on tour.

Stephen Flintoft, Specialist Music Valuer and Auctioneer at the Gallery continues the story. “It is discoveries like this that make my job so fulfilling. Perhaps the most interesting item, among so many is the handwritten lyrics headed ‘by Earth’ to the song ‘Changing Phases’ a title later changed to ‘Solitude’ which featured on the 1971 double platinum Black Sabbath album ‘Master of Reality’. It is perhaps ironic as Black Sabbath bring their career to an end, the story goes full circle and artefacts from their very beginning come to light”.

Discovered by a Sheffield resident in the 1980’s when the old London Dockland was demolished the collection is expected to generate considerable national and international interest when it come up for auction next month.
