In the early 1960’s a bright eyed teenage lad walked into Cole Brothers Department Store in Sheffield and purchased a Dinky model car for 4 shillings and sixpence (or 22½p in new money). The model was then, for whatever reason, put away. 50 years later that same model, in virtually the condition in which it was bought is to come up for sale at Sheffield Auction Gallery’s Specialist Collectable Toys Auction on Thursday 24th April.

The model in question is a Dinky No.184 – A Volvo 122S in the rare off white paint finish rather than the far more common red finish. And the price fifty years on? The auctioneers have put a pre-sale estimate of £300 – £500.

“I was just amazed at the condition of the model; it is just like the day it was purchased” Sheffield’s Specialist Toy Valuer John Morgan commented. “This model certainly fulfills the collectors market requirement of condition, condition, condition bringing the greatest interest” continued John.

This sale will be the inaugural auction in the Gallery’s brand new first floor Saleroom “The 1840 Room”; which completes the original aspirations of the Company only three years ago when the brand new purpose-built Saleroom at Heeley, Sheffield opened after 12 months under construction. Director Liz Dashper said “we are delighted that the Specialist Toys department goes from strength to strength and the new saleroom will only help to develop that area of collecting and we are looking forward to a bright future with a saleroom dedicated to specialist auctions, adding to our very much established diary of Antique & Fine Art Sales”.
